T. N. contributes 34 per cent to the total production

COIMBATORE: Coconut farmers have been asked to take into account the price forecast made by the Domestic Export Market Intelligence Cell (DEMIC) of the Tamil Nadu Agricultural University before they made harvest plans.

Trade sources have revealed that arrivals of coconut were high in February – June and will be high in July – December. Traders from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Andhra Pradesh, and Kerala will continue to source out the nuts to meet the festival demand.

Based on this trend, the farm level price of coconut in the Pollachi area is expected to rule around Rs. 5 – Rs. 5.50 during August – September and Rs. 5.75 – Rs. 6 during October – November. In other markets, prices are expected to be still lower.

Coconut is marketed on the basis of weight and number.

The major coconut growing state in the country is Kerala followed by Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

Tamil Nadu contributed 34 per cent to the total production with 14,495 nuts a hectare.

Coimbatore, Thanjavur, Dindigul, Kanyakumari, Vellore, Erode, Theni, Tirunelveli, Krishnagiri, Salem and Madurai are the major growing areas accounting for 80 per cent of the State production.
