HYDERABAD: The issue of holding official celebrations to mark the Hyderabad Liberation Day on September 17 is heading for a controversy within the ruling Congress. Telangana Congress leaders were critical of Chief Minister K. Rosaiah for his reported remarks in Warangal that the Government would continue with the existing tradition while the leaders from Rayalaseema voicing views against official celebrations. Senior Congress leader J.C. Diwakar Reddy claimed in an informal chat with reporters that the Independence Day celebrations were being organised officially across the country. “There cannot be two Independence days for either the country or the State,” he said. Former Minister T. Jeevan Reddy said it was not proper for Mr. Rosaiah to make such remarks after assuring a delegation of Telangana elected representatives that he would positively consider their demand for official celebration of Hyderabad Liberation Day. “The Chief Minister claims that he will follow the existing tradition. Will it mean he will continue the neglect of representations given on the issue from time to time?” he asked. Congress Nalgonda MP G. Sukhender Reddy said the liberation day would be celebrated across the region on September 17 and a representation was made to the government to organise official celebrations considering the aspirations of the people. He went ahead to claim that “we will anyway celebrate the historic event officially from 2011 in separate Telangana”. V. Purushottam Reddy said it was unfortunate that liberation of Hyderabad from the Nizam's rule was not being cherished annually by branding it as a Telangana related issue.
