Uniting for a cause: Foreign delegates participating in the ‘62nd Annual AIESEC 2010 International Congress' in Hyderabad on Monday.

HYDERABAD: The 62 {+n} {+d} Annual AIESEC International Congress 2010 kicked off in the State capital on Monday with its global president Hugo Pereira saying that India was the emerging land of opportunity and possibility.

An organisation for youth with a membership of about 45,000 from 107 countries, this is the second time that India is hosting the event, the first occasion being in Agra in 2005. An international platform for young people to explore and develop their leadership potential, AIESEC (an acronym of a French name) brings young people from around the world together with the common goal for a better future.

Speaking at the Congress, Mr. Pereira said the organisation represented the emerging leadership in the world. Between August 23 and September 1, over 700 youth from around the globe will discuss issues of leadership, environmental protection, global warming, climate change and programmes aimed at ensuring that children got access to quality health and education.

Mr. Pereira said that India's role in the global scenario was increasingly becoming important and recalled that with the highest population of youth available here, AIESEC India was playing a key role in the organisation's road map ahead and providing able leadership, he said.

The theme of this year's conference is ‘Converging Leadership and Diversity'.

Others at the inaugural included Amit Shahi, CEO, Theidea Works, Shivender Singh, MD, The Fortis Group, V. Rajanna, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Aditya Soma, president of the Congress and Manveer Grewal, president, AIESEC, India. Mr. Shivender Singh, a former AIESEC member, described that the organisation was an amazing platform for youth to chalk out plans to achieve global objectives.

He reeled out statistics that pointed out to India's strength in having the best of human resources with 50 per cent of the population under 25 years of age and about 70 per cent below the age of 35.

The inaugural was interspersed with cultural performances that included a ‘kathak' recital from the Natyanjali Dance School, a display of ‘Kalaripayattu' and a fusion dance that had young men dressed in military fatigues jiving to the popular ‘Jai Ho' number from “Slumdog Millionaire”, even as two classical dancers joined the performance. In the evening, the delegates set up stalls showcased their country at the Shilpa Kala Vedika complex here which was named as ‘Global Village'. Dubbed ‘Sampradaya Vedika', the stalls showed glimpses of traditional dress, food and the customs of each of the 107 countries.
