GOOD OPPORTUNITY:Students explaining a model at a symposium in Tuticorin. Tuticorin: With the objective of reinforcing the scientific spirit and motivating students, a State-level technical physics symposium ‘PHYSTIVAL – 2010' was organised by the Department of Physics at V.O. Chidambaram College here on August 23 and 24. It was inaugurated by M. Sakthivel, Assistant General Manager, (Human Resources Development) Sterlite Industries, Tuticorin. Students were kindled to pursue higher studies in physics and information about the various scholarships available was given by D. Khanna, Assistant Professor, Department of Physics, Karunya Deemed University, Coimbatore, the chief guest. A. Francis, Principal, said the number of students, who wish to join the life science courses for post-graduation, had dwindled. Even students of life sciences discipline had preferred professional courses such as Master of Computer Applications (MCA) and Master of Business Administration (MBA) after their under graduation. To energise the students that physics is a dynamic subject in the academic career, live circuit designing contest was organised for both undergraduate and postgraduate students. Students from various colleges presented papers on techie-talk and also on green energy. A quiz competition was conducted as part of programme. Students from 13 colleges participated in the symposium. The Head, Department of Physics and Convener of the programme, S.R. Balaji, was present among others.
