Panel set up to streamline claims in motor vehicle cases
Staff Reporter
BANGALORE: The Karnataka High Court on Monday constituted a State-level committee to streamline accident claims and ensure expeditious payment of compensation in motor vehicle cases.
Justice L. Narayanaswamy passed the order in a motor vehicle case.
He constituted a committee to be headed by the Advocate-General/Additional Advocate General and comprising an Additional Director-general of Police (ADGP), Joint Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Transport Commissioner and a Registrar of the High Court. A senior advocate, S.P. Shankar, was also nominated as member of the committee and the Registrar (Judicial), High Court, Krishna Bhat, was asked to immediately convene a meeting.
In his order, Mr. Narayanaswamy said the committee could give its recommendations on streamlining the claims system and ensure that the people do not run from pillar to post to claim compensation. He said the committee could also suggest measures to the State for effective implementation of Section 158 of Motor Vehicle Act. The committee will have jurisdiction all over Karnataka and it will have the power to look into all claims in the State.
Earlier, Additional Advocate-General K.M. Nataraj filed a statement on the number of accidents in the State and the claims settled by the Claims Tribunals.
Mr. Shankar also suggested measures to simplify the claims procedure.
