Madikeri
Madikeri: The All-India Trade Union Congress (AITUC) is organising a protest and demonstration here on September 7 to press for its longstanding demands, president of the Kodagu unit H.M. Somappa said. He was speaking to presspersons here on Tuesday. The elephant menace would be the focal point of the protests, he said. Lives of labourers in the plantations were being lost due to elephant attacks and their children were afraid to go to school, Mr. Somappa said and demanded that the State Government take adequate steps to provide protection to them. If steps were not initiated within 15 days the members would stage a dharna in front of the residence of the Chief Minister in Bangalore, he said. The AITUC demanded that the district administration to earmark ‘paisari' (revenue) land coming under the gram panchayats for distribution among the poor, landless and labourers in the district. Foodgrains to be given to the poor were being curtailed for no reason, he alleged. Mr. Somappa regretted that BPL cards were yet to be given to the deserving people in Kodagu. The AITUC would also demand that the ‘unit' system adopted by the Government to provide foodgrains from the ration depots be scrapped as it was irrational. The AITUC would urge the State Government to take necessary measures to provide interest-free educational loan to the children of labourers, Mr. Somappa said.
