A wide variety: Documentaries directed by students of Jyothi Nivas College and Central College will be screened at the film festival starting on Friday. Bangalore: The fifth edition of the international film festival on water called “Voices from the Waters” will commence here on August 27. The festival aims at understanding water from different perspectives. In six different venues in Bangalore in over three days, 51 documentaries and one feature film related to water will be screened. “The festival will look at water from the perspective of floods, drought and livelihood. Water, which is the primary nurturing force of life, will be looked at from different angles”, Festival Director George Kutti told presspersons here. Over a 100 submissions from across the world were received of which 52 have been selected. The festival includes six films from Bangalore of which two have been directed by students of Jyothi Nivas College and Central College respectively. In all, 16 documentaries are from India. Internationally acclaimed documentaries to be screened at the festival include H2Oil, Addicted to Plastic, The Voice of the Mapuche, The Waters of Chenini and The Soul of Water. A feature film The Damned Rain about farmers' suicides in the Vidharba region of Maharashtra will also be screened. The documentaries that will be screened at the festival will include those from Bangladesh, Brazil, Chile, Iran, Iraq, U.K., U.S., South Africa, and Canada among others. Films will be screened at six venues across Bangalore — Alliance Française de Bangalore in Vasanthnagar, Badami House on N.R. Road, YWCA at Koramangala, Suchitra Film Society in Banashankari, MES College in Malleshwaram, and at Bal Bhavan in Cubbon Park exclusively for schoolchildren. The festival would be inaugurated by actor Umashree at the Alliance Française de Bangalore on August 27 at 6.45 p.m. and filmmaker Suresh Heblikar will preside over the function. The festival will conclude with “Politics of Water”, a conference on water on August 30. Among the participants will be grassroots level water activists who will share their experiences as activists with the audience.
