Games venues to be taken over by security agencies

Vinay Kumar

NEW DELHI: Concerned over the delay in handing over stadia, training venues and village complex — which are still being readied for the Commonwealth Games — to the security agencies, the Union Home Ministry has set a series of dates on which it will take over and seal the venues after carrying out security and anti-sabotage checks.

To begin with, the Commonwealth Games Village complex near Akshardham Temple in East Delhi will be taken over by the security agencies over the next two to three days and will be locked down after carrying elaborate anti-sabotage checks, senior Home Ministry officials said here. “Gradually, we will move in at other venues, conduct anti-sabotage checks there and seal them. At some places, mock security drills and dry runs will also be conducted,” senior Home Ministry officials said.

A high-level meeting, held in the Home Ministry on Tuesday, reviewed a number of aspects, including security and traffic management, related to the Commonwealth Games to be held here from October 3 to 14. The meeting noted that guests, officials and sportspersons will start arriving in Delhi from September 15, and reviewed arrangements being made for transportation, accommodation and security at training centres.

“The meeting looked into micro-management of a number of issues relating to the games. These included movement of traffic from airport to the village complex, movement of guests, VIPs and security arrangements in the entire national capital,” senior officials said.

Finishing touches

All the venues, including 12 main stadia, four non-competition venues, six training centres and village complex, were to be handed over to the security agencies by August 1. The delay has made the task of the Ministry more difficult in giving finishing touches to security arrangements and drills.
