CHENNAI: Karnataka qualified for the semifinals of the Buchi Babu all-India invitation cricket tournament after a four-wicket win over City XI in the third and final round of the league phase here on Tuesday. Karnataka's spinners, Abrar Kazi and Sunil Raju, shared six wickets to dismiss City for 147 before K.L. Rahul made 58 to guide his side home. V. Maaruthi Raghav's all-round performance (48 n.o. and four for 19) went in vain for City. Karnataka's victory saw it tied at the top of Group B with Rajasthan with six points. Karnataka's superior net run-rate — 1.7301 to Rajasthan's 0.0556 — helped it book a semifinal berth. Karnataka will play Mumbai in the semifinals. The Ranji champion had confirmed its semifinal spot with wins in its first two Group A matches. Matters weren't as straightforward in Groups C and D, which were hit worst by the weather. Lots had to be drawn to determine the semifinalists after each group had four teams tied on three points. Kerala and Punjab were the sides fortunate to be picked. They will play each other. Tamil Nadu fell two wickets short of qualifying from Group D. M. Vijay's side had Hyderabad struggling at 130 for eight, but rain frustrated its push for victory. The scores (round three, day two): Group A: Mumbai 253 in 89.5 overs (Kaustab Pawar 70, Abhishek Nayar 41, G. Shankar Rao five for 100) drew with Andhra 19 for one in four overs. Points: Mumbai 1 (Total 9), Andhra 1 (Total 3). Districts drew with Orissa (both days washed out). Districts 1 (2), Orissa 1 (2). Group B: Rajasthan 27 for no loss in 7.5 overs drew with Madhya Pradesh. Rajasthan 1 (6), MP 1 (3). City XI 147 in 42.3 overs (M. Praveen Srivatsan 40, V. Maaruthi Raghav 42 n.o.) lost to Karnataka 151 for six in 32.2 overs (K.L. Rahul 58, Maaruthi Raghav four for 19). Karnataka 4 (6), City 0 (1). Group C: Saurashtra 172 for three in 38.4 overs (Jaydev Shah 97, Sheldon Jackson 44 n.o.) drew with Assam. Saurashtra 1 (3), Assam 1 (3). Uttar Pradesh 101 for four in 30.3 overs drew with Kerala. Uttar Pradesh 1 (3), Kerala 1 (3). Group D: Tamil Nadu 256 drew with Hyderabad 130 for eight in 56 overs. TN 1 (3), Hyderabad 1 (3). Punjab 246 for seven in 73 overs (Vishwas Bhalla 65, Bipul Sharma 71, Parry Goyal 42 n.o.) drew with Vidarbha. Punjab 1 (3), Vidarbha 1 (3) .
