When weird figures went on the prowl in Thrissur

Special Correspondent

Thrissur: Donning wooden masks and garbs fashioned out of grass, Kummatti performers took to the streets on Wednesday.

Onam is the time when Kummatti is staged in and around Thrissur. Each region is assigned a particular day for staging the art form.

Contingents from Kizhakkumpattukara Thekkumuri, Vadakkumuri and Nallankara perform Kummatti on Moonnam Onam day, while those from Chelakkattukara and Ancheri do it on Nalam Onam day.

Kizhakkumpattukara hosts the Thekkummuri Desa Kummatti every year.

Vintage

The masks used by the Kizhakkumpattukara contingents are more than 64 years old. “Kummatti retains the spirit of traditional Onam celebrations. The performances are carnivalesque with bands of youths and children joining the dancers,” said a member of a Kummatti team.

Kummatti draws inspiration from tales culled from the Ramayana, episodes from ‘Darika Vadhom' and folk tales.

“The best Kummatti performances in the State can be seen in Thrissur and Palakkad,” said a Kummatti performer.
