Floods abate in Hagari and Tungabhadra

One more washed away in floods in Siruguppa taluk on Wednesday taking the death toll to two

BELLARY: The floods situation witnessed in several parts of Bellary and Siruguppa taluk caused by the Hagari river and other major and minor rivulets in the districts because of heavy rain in the last five days, started receding on Wednesday.

The death toll has risen to two with one more person washed away in the floods at Vattumurdi in Siruguppa taluk on Tuesday evening.

The body was found on Wednesday and the name of the victim was given as Chandregowda.

There were reports of deaths of heads of cattle in Hadagali and Kudligi taluks.

Houses damaged

As many as 579 houses in Sandur taluk were reported to have been damaged in Wednesday's rain taking the total number of houses damaged to 2,236 in the district. Standing crops on 2,162 hectares of land had been damaged.

The water-level in the Hagari, which had been rising in Bellary and Siruguppa taluks and submerged some of the bridges linking Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh, had come down considerably. The water, which was flowing about five feet above the bridge on Tuesday, was flowing three feet below the bridge on Wednesday.

However, heavy vehicles have been banned on these bridges which had developed cracks.

Buses and light vehicles were allowed on these bridges. The Tungabhadra had started receding after release of water from the reservoir was reduced.

On Wednesday, the inflow and outflow at the reservoir was 56,000 cusecs. Water was released from 30 crest gates. into the river.

According to official sources, the loss of private and public property, owing to heavy rains and flash floods had been put at Rs. 14.39 crore.
