Celebrate Hyderabad Liberation Day officially: CPI

Demands construction of a memorial in twin cities

HYDERABAD: The Communist Party of India (CPI) has demanded that Chief Minister K. Rosaiah take steps to officially celebrate September 17 as Hyderabad Liberation Day or as the day of its merger with Indian Union.
Shows concern
The CPI has expressed concern over the reports that the Chief Minister expressed his inability to officially celebrate the occasion when representatives of a political party called on him.
Coupled with this was the statement of a former Minister that Independence Day would not be celebrated twice.
“The statement exposes the former Minister's lack of knowledge of history,” CPI State secretary K. Narayana said.
In a letter to Mr. Rosaiah, Dr. Narayana recalled the struggle against Razakars in which hundreds were killed and subsequent liberation of erstwhile Hyderabad State through police action.
The Central government had duly recognised the historic struggle and was giving pensions to freedom fighters.
The State government should, therefore, reconsider its decision and ensure official celebration of Hyderabad Liberation Day. Besides, they should take steps to construct a memorial at Jala Drushyam in the city in memory of the people who sacrificed their lives.
The government should also felicitate freedom fighters in Telangana on September 17.
