Lok Satta demands basic amenities

Special Correspondent

KADAPA: Lok Satta activists staged dharna before Kadapa Municipal Corporation office on Wednesday demanding better civic services, provision of basic amenities and steps to curb corruption among civic staff.

Lok Satta State vice-president T.R. Jagannatha Reddy, district president P. Venugopal and secretary G. Tirupataiah demanded that the government conduct municipal elections as per schedule and hold direct elections to the Mayor post.

Despite collecting water taxes, the corporation was failing to supply potable drinking water and hence people were forced to shell down money to buy purified water, they lamented. The Municipal Corporation failed to keep up sanitation and not cleaning garbage dumps along roads or clearing choked drains on a regular basis, they alleged. Insanitation has led to mosquito menace and people were burdened financially by using mosquito repellents.

Potholes on the roads were left unfilled and served as breeding grounds for mosquitoes.

Burnt street lights not replaced promptly and the darkness gave scope for thefts in several areas, they said. Pollution and traffic congestion were also problems on which none paid attention.

The Lok Satta leaders demanded ward-wise committees with local people in them for resolving basic problems. Municipal officials were not following the Citizens' Charter and corruption was rampant, they alleged. District vice-president C. Chandrasekhar, treasurer D. Krishna, Mahila Satta leaders Vijayalakshmi and Kruparani, students' wing coordinator Srikanth Reddy and leaders S. Rafi and S. Nazeemunnisa participated.
