New initiative by UGC to promote social sciences

University Grants Commission chairman Prof. S. K. Thorat inaugurated a six-day workshop on “Research and Publications in Social Sciences” organised by Jamia Millia Islamia's Academic Staff College and the Economic and Political Weekly in the Capital earlier this week.  

The workshop, which concludes on August 28, is part of a new initiative by the UGC to promote and strengthen social sciences in India.

Thirty-five faculty members from different universities and colleges of the country are participating in the workshop which is aimed at social scientists from disciplines such as economics, history, sociology, political science and philosophy.

As part of the workshop, participants are being introduced to the skills required to prepare research papers for publication in journals and guidelines and norms related to publication.

A distinctive feature of the workshop is individual discussions with the participants on research papers they have submitted for the workshop.

The results of the national entrance test conducted by Aligarh Muslim University's Residential Coaching Academy for admission to coaching for civil and judicial services have been declared.

The tests held in Aligarh, Lucknow and Kozhikode were conducted to select 100 candidates who will be eligible for coaching.

The coaching classes are mainly aimed at minorities, Scheduled Castes/Scheduled Tribes and women. The results can be viewed on www.rcaamu.com and www.amu.ac.in.

Greater Noida-Based IILM Graduate School of Management held its 15 {+t} {+h} Annual Convocation ceremony this past week. While toppers were presented gold and silver medals, a total of 181 diplomas were conferred on students.

Indira Gandhi National Open University is holding a national seminar on “Traditions of Folk Literature” on August 30 and 31. Politics, sociology, literary and media theory, gender studies, film and video studies, cultural anthropology, philosophy, museum studies, art history, communication and the oral and written traditions of folklore literature will be covered through discussions of significant literary texts from folklore literature.

Given the need for policy planers to be sensitive with regard to the impact of developmental processes on marginalised communities, the seminar will focus on study of marginal societies through literature as well as the impact from contact between marginalised communities and complex societies.

Jaipuria Institute of Management, Indore, has announced admissions to its post-graduate programme on digital management practices which focuses on shifting traditional organisation management functions and business practices to the “e” platform.

 Students will be short-listed on the basis of scores in admission tests such as CAT, MAT, XAT, GRE and GMAT.

The short-listed candidates will be called for a group discussion and leadership exercise.

The group discussions will be conducted in Mumbai, Chennai, New Delhi, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Kolkata, Bangalore, Indore, Patna and Lucknow.

The last date for submitting applications is September 8.
