Special Correspondent

Thrissur: The fifth Thrissur International Film Festival (TIFF- 2010), to begin on September 2, will screen 75 films from 17 countries. The week-long fete will celebrate the 150th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore by screening Satyajit Ray's ‘Charulata', based on the Nobel laureate's story, ‘Nastanirh'. Ray's documentary on Tagore, made on the occasion of the writer's birth centenary in May 1961, will also be screened. “Ten or 12 minutes of it are among the most moving and powerful things that I have produced,” Ray was quoted as saying.

The festival will focus on Hungarian and Mexican cinema. The package from Hungary includes ‘Esther's Inheritance' (director: Sándor Márai), ‘Panic' (Attila Till), ‘The Investigator' (Attila Gigor), ‘Tranquility' (Alföldi Róbert), ‘Last Supper at the Arabian Gray Horse' (Miklos Jancso). The Mexican films include ‘Abel' (Diego Luna), ‘To the Sea' (Pedro González-Rubio), ‘Northless' (Rigoberto Perezcano), ‘Love, Pain and Vice Versa' (Alfonso Pineda Ulloa) and ‘Spiral' (Jorge Perez Solano).

On show will be works of German director Alexander Kluge, French New Wave pioneer Eric Rohmer, and German experimental auteur Werner Schroeter. The festival will pay tribute to Portuguese writer Jose Saramago by screening ‘Blindness', a film based on his novel. A special package of films will be presented to observe the 65th anniversary of the end of the Second World War.
