880 healthcare personnel vaccinated

Chamarajanagar: Over 880 personnel belonging to the Health and Family Welfare Department have been vaccinated against the A(H1N1) virus since April this year. The Union Ministry of Health has provided more than 1,000 doses of vaccine for healthcare providers in the district.

Nearly 69 doctors, 172 nurses, 20 pharmacists, 361 paramedical staff and 264 support staff working in various hospitals in the district were vaccinated against the infection from April 8, 2010 to August 12, 2010.

Two patients, Savitha (27) and Hanumantha Nayaka (29), from Chamarajanagar town who died, tested positive for A(H1N1) influenza. Out of the 17 blood samples tested, 11 tested positive for chikungunya and two for dengue. The district surveillance unit has treated over 300 patients hit by communicable disease.

In the case of chikungunya and dengue, no deaths have been reported till Thursday. The district health authorities have reported three deaths on account of acute gastroenteritis, between April 2010 and June 2010.

The district hospitals have been provided with Tamiflu tablets and personal protective equipment. Of the received 2,590 fluvir tablets, 2,180 have been issued and the remaining 410 stocked in the district hospital.

The district surveillance unit has taken various measures to curb the spread of the diseases in view of the monsoon.

Fogging operations, insecticidal spray and door-to-door awareness campaigns are being taken out.
