Letters to the Editor
This refers to the report that the Lok Sabha adopted the nuclear liability bill after dropping the contentious ‘intent' provision. Hats off to The Hindu for its courageous and responsible journalism on the issue, which made the government address people's concerns and make the necessary changes in the nuclear liability bill. The newspaper's contribution in this whole exercise is commendable. Once again, it proved its calibre by living up to its readers' expectations, upholding the values of democracy. Rahul Yadev Duppali, Mahabubnagar The Hindu deserves full marks for exposing in time the chinks in the nuclear liability bill. It was not only the government but also the BJP that had to change tack in the face of the newspaper's relentless campaign. It was responsible and activist journalism at its best. Despite the ultimate consensual passage, the government owes an explanation to the nation on the sleight of hand displayed time and again during the piloting of the bill. Manohar Alembath, Kannur Thanks to The Hindu for its significant, in-depth informative news columns, editorials, and cartoons that shaped the nuclear liability bill. The details and the continuous follow-up on the issue made the Opposition wake up and pressure the government. Ezhilan KaVe, Tirupur The adoption of the civil nuclear liability bill by the Lok Sabha marks the fulfilment of a long-standing commitment made by the UPA. The fact that it was passed after protracted deliberations, particularly on Section 17(b), and 18 amendments will no doubt make it advantageous and put India in a win-win situation. As rightly pointed out by the Prime Minister, the passage of the bill will pave the way for the end of nuclear apartheid against India. The UPA government and the main Opposition party deserve praise for coming together to pass the bill. People expect the same spirit of national fervour in future as well. E. Krishnan, Palakkad
