BANGALORE: Minister for Excise M.P. Renukacharya has said that the department will intensify checks on Karwar-Goa border to curb illegal transportation of liquor into the State.

Addressing presspersons here on Thursday, the Minister said that because of the illegal liquor transportation the State was losing Rs. 500 crore annually. The loss of revenue had prompted the Government to strengthen its squad.

He said he had written to Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa seeking approval to recruit 10 inspectors and 50 guards to augment the staff strength of the mobile squad in Karwar. He also directed excise officials to eliminate illicit liquor production in Kolar, Belgaum, Chamarajanagar and Bangalore districts, and Karwar. “If there is any hooch tragedy, top officials of the district will be held responsible for it and they will have to pay a price for it,” he warned.
