KOLKATA: Sanjay Bagadia, owner of the fire-ravaged Stephen Court in the city, who was arrested from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh two days ago, was remanded to police custody on Thursday by court here for five days.
His bail plea was rejected. The court directed that he be produced before it on August 31.
Mr. Bagadia, who is one of the directors of Stephen Court Private Limited which conducted the affairs of the building, is a co-accused along with five others under several Sections of the West Bengal Fire Services Act and faces the charge of gross negligence. Three floors of the 80-year-old heritage building were destroyed in the March 23 fire, which claimed 43 lives. Many occupants died as they were unable to escape, while some leapt to their deaths.
The caretakers of the building, Tarun Bagadia and Ramshankar Singh, were arrested the next day. Liftman Jaiprakash Singh was recently arrested. The police are looking for two other directors of the company, Sushil Surekha and Pradeep More.
