BANGALORE: Five men, including two relatives and three friends of the former Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) councillor Bomb Naga, were arrested here on Wednesday for allegedly attempting to kill another former BBMP councillor, Govindaraju.

The Malleswaram police said the suspects allegedly attacked Mr. Govindaraju of the Janata Dal (Secular) on June 21 near the Halli Mane Hotel.

The arrested men are S. Babu alias Vandre (28) of Kempapura Agrahara, A. Kumar alias Bayappa (33) of Swathanthryapalya, M. Vinod alias (22) from Adam village in Chennai, D. Gopi alias A.G.S. Gopi (22) and Lingaraju Nithyanandam (22) from M.G.R. Nagar in Chennai.

Bayappa and Vandre are relatives of Bomb Naga while the other three are his friends. V. Nagaraj alias Bomb Naga is absconding, the police said. Bomb Naga, his wife Queen Elizabeth, and his relatives had contested for the BBMP Council from seven wards in the vicinity of Srirampura. All lost their deposits.

Govindaraju, who had won from Swathanthrapalya Ward twice, had campaigned against Queen Elizabeth. Bomb Naga allegedly had hired the accused for Rs. 1.5 lakh to kill Govindaraju, an officer at the Malleswaram police station said.

All the five had attacked Govindaraju with razors and knives when he was having coffee near the hotel on June 21.

Women murdered

In separate instances, two young married women were found murdered in their homes on Thursday. Both husbands are absconding.

The first case was reported in Rajajinagar, where Sumathi (21), a Mandya native, was married to Manjunath, a business analyst with a private firm, three months ago. In the morning, Manjunath and his parents called her family to say she had hanged herself. They rushed to her home to find the rope cut and her body lying unattended.

Incensed, they trashed the house, the police said. Later, the relatives told The Hindu they found scratch marks and injuries on her body.

Manjunath and his relatives are absconding.

In Laggere early Thursday evening, Parvathi (32), wife of Krishnappa and mother of two, was found dead at her residence with her throat slit.

According to neighbours, the couple, married for 15 years, quarrelled often. They said the couple had fought well into the night on Wednesday.

The police are looking for Krishnappa.
