Junior college for Payakapuram

Special Correspondent

VIJAYAWADA: The State government has sanctioned a Government Junior College to be located in the Vijayawada Municipal Corporation (VMC) grounds in Radha Nagar, Payakapuram.

Vijayawada Central MLA Malladi Vishnu addressing a press conference on Thursday said this was a welcome decision as there was only one government college in the city and there was no junior college in that part of the city. The new college will cater to the needs of the people living in Ajit Singh Nagar, New Rajarajeswari Nagar and Payakapuram right up to Nunna. A GO to this effect was released and the college would function from this academic year (2010-11) itself.

The sanction of the college was part of the Government's efforts to make Intermediate education available to the common man, he said. The VMC would allot two acres for the college and the Vijayawada Guntur Tenali Mangalagiri Urban Development Authority (VGTMUDA) had agreed to contribute Rs. 50 lakh for development of infrastructure. Mr. Vishnu said he had already announced a grant of Rs. 10 lakhs from his Constituency Development Funds. Vijayawada MP Lagadapati Rajagopal too announced the release of funds from MPLADS. The MLA said he would release Rs. 10 lakh every year until a full-fledged college was developed. The college would function temporarily from the JDC High School in Vambay colony.
