New homes:Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa inaugurating the Asare houses for the flood-hit in Raichur district on Friday.

Shakthinagar (Raichur district): Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa has said that that he will meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh after the first week of September and urge him to extend additional financial assistance for the speedy completion of ongoing rehabilitation work in villages in north Karnataka that were hit by floods last year.

Addressing a press conference here, he said that last year the State had asked the Centre to release Rs. 6,500 crore for relief measures in the flood-hit districts. So far, it had released a grant of Rs. 1,800 crore for the purpose. The State required additional funds to finish the ongoing construction of houses to rehabilitate the affected families. The Centre should release the rest of the grant immediately, he said.

He said that a Central team was expected to visit the State in the first week of September to review the rehabilitation process. The team would visit Raichur for two days from September 2 and later visit the other flood-hit areas. He would meet the Prime Minister in the second week of September and urge him to release additional grants, the Chief Minister said.

Visit to RTPS

On his way to N. Malakapur village in Raichur taluk to hand over a cluster of houses constructed by Cisco Systems, the Chief Minister visited the Raichur Theramal Power Station (RTPS) and held discussions with officials on the functioning of the plant. After inspecting the coal handling plant and the 250-MW eighth unit of the RTPS, which is ready for commercial operation, he said the normal power generation at the thermal plant had been affected by some technical problems for the past few months. Although its capacity was 1,470 MW, the plant was able to generate only 500 MW daily. He would dispatch a team of experts to study the problems faced by the thermal plant and take action to improve power generation, he said.
