City reservoirs receive good inflows

G.V. Prasada Sarma

Daily water supply is now possible, says senior official

VISAKHAPATNAM: With copious inflows into the major reservoirs that cater to the city's needs, the scarce days of last summer are behind now. Though the reservoirs are not full, the levels after the current downpour have given enough confidence to authorities that they now speak of tiding over the next summer continuing supply ever day.

The three major reservoirs -- Yeleru, Tatipudi and Raiwada -- have received considerable inflows owing to successive wet spells.

Against a maximum of 86.4 m, Yeleru on Friday stands at 80.51 m; Raiwada 111.5 m (maximum 114 m) and Tatipudi 282.6 ft (maximum 297 ft).

The levels that had plummeted owing to two successive poor monsoons did not improve even after Cyclone Laila about two months ago.

On June 28, the level in Yeleru was 69.36 m (minimum of 68.8 m); Raiwada 103.25 m (minimum 99 m) and Tatipudi 266.6 ft (minimum 251 ft).

“However, since then the situation has consistently improved. Now it is possible to tide over the next summer by supplying water every day,” Superintendent Engineer (Water Supply) V. Chandraiah told The Hindu on Friday.

The Greater Visakhapantam Municipal Corporation that had resorted to alternate day supply from March 8 resumed supply every day from July 8 with a rider that the situation would be reviewed after two months.

With a good monsoon forecast and rainfall satisfactory the decision to revert to supply every day was taken though officials were not really happy with the levels at that time.
