‘Congress leaders stashed money in foreign banks'

Special Correspondent

BJP MP puts it at a whopping US $ 1,500 billion

HYDERABAD: BJP MP Ram Jethmalani has alleged that the biggest names in Congress were involved in stashing of US $ 1,500 billion in foreign banks, mainly Swiss.

Germany furnished to India some of these names but they were not disclosed because they belonged to the ruling party. On the contrary, the British and American governments were compelled to give names of their own people who were involved in similar act. India was an exception, he told a press conference here on Saturday.

On a visit to address a meeting in support of separate Telangana, Mr. Jethmalani said the issue was being fought out in courts. However, he said he had a grievance against those who owned the media refusing to cooperate in disclosure of names citing confidentiality clause imposed on Germans who furnished the information. Telangana issue

Discussing the Telangana issue, he said he was surprised that Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram announced the starting of process to grant Statehood to the region but almost went back on it. He said he did not know to what pressures Mr. Chidambaram succumbed. He felt there should be no objection to conceding separate State because the demand of people of Telangana for more control over natural assets was understandable in the backdrop of neglect of the region. There was no doubt that Telangana contributed immensely to the revenue of the State but not even a fair share was ploughed back to the region. He said he had great respect for Justice Srikrishna for his integrity but the terms of reference of the committee headed by the latter were badly worded.
