I will consider plea for OBCs panel: Manmohan

Special Correspondent

NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh assured a group of OBC MPs that he would take up the issue with the Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar for setting up a Parliamentary Committee for OBCs to monitor the effective implementation of reservation for OBCs by various government departments and educational institutions.

He conveyed this to a group of MPs, led by Convenor of Parliamentary Forum of OBC MPs, V. Hanumantha Rao, when they submitted a memorandum to him here on Thursday . As many as 43 MPs, belonging to both Houses of Parliament, have signed the memorandum.

Mr. Rao said according to the government statistics, as on Jan.1, 2006, nearly 20 ministries/departments had not given opportunities for OBCs in Group A posts. In many departments, the implementation of reservation to OBCs was not done in true spirit .
