NEW DELHI: Lajja Gauswami shot 588 in women's 50-metre rifle prone and edged ahead of C. Rekha in the race for the Asian Games squad in the shooting trials in Pune on Saturday. Lajja tied with C. Rekha, who had shot an impressive 594 in the junior event of the World championship in Munich, with an average of 588, but enjoyed the advantage of having shot 92 inner 10s as compared to 83 by the latter. The top two positions were held by Meena Kumari (590.75) and World champion Tejaswini Sawant (590.0), and they will shoot in the Commonwealth Games, while Lajja could get the nod as the third member for the Asian Games. Rajkumari Rathore shot the best among 19 in the trials with a score of 590, but could only take her overall average to 587.0, good enough to put her in the fifth spot in a list of 28. In men's prone, there was no change at the top as Hariom Singh (593.25), Gagan Narang (591.50) and Sanjeev Rajput (590.50) remained unchallenged. Joydeep Karmakar slipped to the fifth position with an average of 589.50, as Surendra Singh Rathod shot 593 to take his average to 589.75. In men's rapid fire pistol also, there was no change at the top with Vijay Kumar (581.0), Rahul Panwar (571.75) and Gurpreet Singh (570.75) holding on to their averages. Pemba Tamang failed to push his average up to get into the reckoning as he shot 569. Tamang was placed fifth with an average of 568.75, behind C.K. Chaudhary who shot 570 to have an average of 570.25. Meanwhile, in the shotgun trials at the Dr. Karni Singh range in Tughlakabad, national skeet champion, Mairaj Ahmad Khan, and Allan Daniel Peoples shot 120 each to ensure their place for the Commonwealth Games.
