dated August 30, 1960: “Gamma Garden”

Asia's largest “Gamma Garden” at which “radio active” experiments on plant life will be conducted was formally inaugurated in New Delhi on August 25 by the Union Food and Agriculture Minister Mr. S.K. Patil. Mr. Patil said the opening of the garden symbolised “a significant milestone in the history of scientific research in India.” A powerful 200-curie source of cobalt-60 obtained from Canada which is worked by remote-control electronic mechanism will supply the gamma rays for conducting experiments. The mechanism has been designed and fabricated by the Atomic Energy Establishment at Trombay. Mr. Patil said the garden, located near the Pusa Agricultural Research Institute, was one of the few gardens of its kind in the world. It had incorporated in its design several unique features, based on the experience drawn from the working of similar gardens in the USA and Sweden. The establishment of the garden, he said, was in consonance with India's desire to exploit atomic energy for peaceful purposes and India's determination to forge ahead in agriculture research and development.
