Kozhikode: The district conference of Nanma, an association of Malayali artistes, was held at Girish Puthencheri Nagar (NGO Union Hall) here on Sunday. The conference was inaugurated by filmmaker Aryadan Shaukath. Mr. Shaukath lauded the artistes for maintaining a liberal stance amidst the communalism and political differences in the State. Nanma was formed four years ago to provide a unified platform to artistes in the State. Today, it has units in all 14 districts and many sub-units. The conference aims at presenting before the government certain demands that are necessary for the artistes to get recognition. Speaking to The Hindu, Nanma secretary K.S. Koya, a theatre artiste, demanded that the government define an artiste and include them in the list of unorganised workers who need legal protection. A commission should be appointed for the purpose. The government should take steps to declare one day in a year as ‘Artiste's day' and celebrate it. Artistes who are more than 50 years' old should get benefits from government, he said. Art education should be included in the curriculum from the school level and the post of art educator should be strengthened. Welfare fund and insurance scheme should include artistes as well, Mr. Koya said.
