BANGALORE: The distinguished police officer, who led the 35-member Special Task Force that killed forest brigand Veerappan, was among the students who received their post-graduate degrees from the National Law School of India University at the convocation ceremony here on Sunday. In 2005, a year after he accomplished the daring feat, IPS officer and then Additional Director General of Police, K. Vijay Kumar, enrolled at the NLSIU for a Masters in Business Law, in distance mode. When his name was announced at the convocation ceremony today, and he was introduced as a “distinguished IPS officer”, the hall burst into thunderous applause. Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Kumar, who is the Director of the Sardar Vallabhai Patel National Police Academy, said that completing the course was indeed a challenge. “It was tough to do. But that just made it more interesting,” he says. He began his course in 2005, but found it difficult to manage his work life and studies. “It was a struggle and it took a lot of support, and tolerance too,” he said, pointing to his wife Meena Vijay Kumar, who was with him at the convocation. The course, he explains, involved taking periodic examinations, assignments and a viva-voce. “I am an operations man, basically. But a part of me always wanted to do some form of academics,” Mr. Kumar explains. So why did a police officer choose to study Business Law? “I wanted to do something different, something out of the ordinary.” Besides, he pointed out that he was inspired by his grandfather who was an illustrious lawyer, and his father who was a policeman. “I wanted to do both,” he said.
