Multi-storeyed commercial complex at Unit-II will be inaugurated

BHUBANESWAR: The Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation on Monday began a three-day-long celebration of Local Self Government Day by lining up several projects to be inaugurated by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and his ministerial colleagues.

Wisdom seems to have dawned on BMC authorities about absence of public toilets in the capital city. As many as nine toilets would be opened for public at various places during celebration of Local Self Government Day.

“All the public toilets have been developed on public private partnership mode. Private players would take care of maintenance in future,” said Anant Narayan Jena, Mayor of BMC, here.

The Mayor said locations were being identified for setting up public toilets in all corners of the capital city.

Besides, a multi-storeyed commercial complex at Unit-II will be inaugurated on Thursday.

The complex would have unique feature of roof top parking – first such parking facility created in the State. The complex which has total 72,000 square feet area houses more than 200 shops.

Another major facility for public will be electrical crematorium at Satya Nagar. The crematorium went defunct soon after cremation of four bodies in 1999. Now the BMC has spent Rs. 7 lakh on the crematorium's renovation. It will charge Rs. 350 for crematorium of each body.

The BMC would bear a financial burden of about Rs. 1 lakh towards electricity charges.

A host of other programmes have been planned to mark the celebration. Community parks, water supply stems, new gymnasium and community centres would be opened in different wards. Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik would address a public meeting at Jayadev Bhawan to mark the occasion on Tuesday.

BMC Commissioner Gadadhar Parida said, “we have made paying of holding tax easier this time.

An e-payment system would be available for public to pay their taxes. It would go a long way in easing pressure on BMC.”
