‘Virasat' begins today in city

Programmes to go on till October 20

MANGALORE: The “Virasat-2010”, organised by the Mangalore chapter of the Society for Promotion of Indian Classical Music and Culture Amongst Youth (SPICMACAY) will be inaugurated on Tuesday at the National Institute of Technology — Karnataka, Surathkal.

The music festival includes a series of programmes across the region till October 20. It will begin with a recital on “Rudra Veena” by Baha'ud'din Mohiuddin Dagar.

The programmes at NIT-K in the days to follow are as follows: Carnatic Veena recital by Jayanthi Kumaresh (September 4), Carnatic vocal by T.V. Sankaranarayanan (September 6), Qawwali by Haji Iqbal Banda Nawaz and troupe (September 26), and Hindustani vocal by Padma Talwalkar (October 4). All these programmes will begin at 5.30 p.m.

Two artistes, Jayanthi Kumaresh and Pushparaj Koshti, will tour the region and give performances at various educational institutions. Ms. Kumaresh's schedule is as follows: September 1, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Madikeri, 6.30 p.m.; September 2 , Vijaya School, Hassan, noon; September 3, SVS College, Bantwal, 10.45 a.m. and Manipal University, Manipal, 6.30 p.m.; and September 4, Sri Bharati College, Nanthoor, Mangalore 1.30 p.m. and Silver Jubilee Auditorium, NITK, 6.00 p.m.

Mr. Koshti will be presenting Surbahar as follows: August 31, Silver Jubilee Auditorium, NITK, 6.00 p.m.; September 1, NITTE, Derlakatte, 5.00 p.m.; September 2, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, Madikeri, 6.30 p.m.; September 3, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya, Mudipu, 4.00 p.m.; and September 4, Manipal University, 6.30 p.m., according to a release.

Music fest in Manipal

Udupi Staff Correspondent reports:

The cultural coordination committee of the Manipal University and the Manipal Chapter of ther SPICMACAY will be organising this year's “Virasat” at Manipal from Tuesday.

A press release issued here on Monday stated that the “Virasat-2010” will have eight programmes of Indian classical music and dance as follows: Hindustani vocal recital by Neela Bhagawath (August 31), Carnatic veena recital by Jayanthi Kumaresh (September 3), Surbahar by Pandit Pushparaj Koshti (September 4), Carnatic vocal by T.V. Shankaranarayanan (September 6), Bharatnatya by Namitha (September 8), Carnatic vocal by Subhashini Parthasarathy (September 26), Qawwali by Ateeq Hussain Bandanawazi and team (September 28), and Hindustani vocal by Padma Talwalkar (October 5).

All programmes will be held at the counselling hall of Manipal University building from 6.30 p.m. The lovers of music and dance have been requested to take their seats 15 minutes before the commencement of the programmes.
