Coimbatore: Coimbatore City police have solved many cases, including the murder of a Singapore national and 20 cases of cheating in Malaysia, with the arrest of a man and his wife. The arrest has also ended Interpol's more than a two-decade-old hunt for the criminal. City Police Commissioner C. Sylendra Babu on Monday told The Hindu that the accused Michael Soosai, who had many aliases, was arrested by the city police recently along with his wife Kumari from a hotel in Chennai in connection with two cases of cheating. The police recovered one kg of gold valued at Rs.18 lakh, two laptops, cellular phones and wristwatches from them. The arrested were remanded to judicial custody and lodged in the Coimbatore Central Prison. Investigations by the police revealed that Soosai was wanted by the Malaysian police and Interpol in connection with many cases since 1980. Hailing from Penang in Malaysia, Soosai and his wife were involved in 20 cases of cheating. He was also found to be involved in luring a Singapore national Subramanian to Coimbatore and murdering him near Cheyyur in Avanashi a couple of years ago. The accused cheated the Malaysian police and Interpol by producing a fake cremation certificate of himself with the help of his wife. The certificate said that Soosai had died on September 12, 2003. Narrating the modus operandi, Mr. Babu said Soosai would use separate SIM cards for every prospective victim and remained elusive. The city police arrested him when the Malaysian authorities were about to close his case files. Mr. Babu rewarded Assistant Commissioner of Police Selvaraj and Inspector Chandrasekhar of the City Crime Branch for their commendable work.
