Coimbatore: Tamilaga Vivasayigal Sangam has urged the Government to hold back the proposed acquisition of lands for airport expansion till the Land Acquisition Act of 1894 is amended in the ensuing session of the Parliament. Talking to reporters, president of the Sangam M.R. Sivasamy pointed out that following the agitation against acquisition of agricultural lands by farmers in Aligarh, the Finance Minister had announced that land acquisition act would be amended. Centre is keen to amend the 120-year-old Land Acquisition Act of 1894. Contrary to the wish of the Centre, State Government was using the Land Acquisition Act of 1894 and the legislations that were brought in for empowering the Highways Department for acquiring lands for road works and airport expansion, he said. Demonstration To press for the demand, in a bid to save the lands in Neelambur, Chavadi, Perumanallur and Avanashi bypass road project areas, the farmers would stage a demonstration in the third week of September.
