Fisheries Department to register boats in Uttara Kannada


Department of Fisheries has collected 11,250 applications till date

Biometric smartcards to have photographs of fisherman concerned and his fingerprint


Karwar: The Department of Fisheries will provide biometric smartcards to the fishermen of the Uttara Kannada district, said the department's Deputy Director S.C. Hemantaraju. He said the department officials have started collecting the data necessary to issue smartcards from the fishermen.

Work done

Till date, 11,250 applications for issue of smartcards have been collected from the Uttara Kannada district.

Interested fishermen can collect the application form from the office of the Assistant Director of the Department of Fisheries in their respective taluks and submit the filled in application to the department immediately.

Once applications are received, Mr. Hemantaraju said that the representatives of the Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) will take photographs of fishermen who have applied for issue of smartcard.

The smartcard will include the fingerprint of the fisherman concerned besides other personal details.

The Department of Fisheries is also collecting details about the fishing boats available in the district.

Till date, 3,293 applications have been received for the registration of the boats.

An appeal

In the past, the Department of Ports was making registration of the boats.

Now the Department of Fisheries was entrusted with the task and it will be done free of cost, said Mr. Hemantaraju.

He said that according to an estimate, there are over 6,000 boats in the district.

He appealed to all fishermen to get their boats registered at the office of the Department of Fisheries in their respective taluks.
