Rural students on cloud nine

TIRUCHI: Rural students showcased their talents in various sports and games over the past two days at the Anna Stadium here under the ‘Panchayat Yuva Krida Aur Khel Abhiyan' (PYKKA) meet conducted at the district-level.

The event organised by the Tiruchi-unit of the Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) attracted over 1500 young sportspersons from various blocks . On Saturday, football, basketball, volleyball, kabaddi, kho-kho, hockey, badminton, table tennis and weightlifting events were conducted for boys and girls under 16 years of age, while athletic events were held on Sunday. Earlier, the meet was conducted in all the 14 blocks. The winners in team games and the top two finishers in athletics at the block-level qualified for the district-level tourney.

“PYKKA provides an opportunity for the rural youth to exhibit their talents,” said P. Kalaiselvan, District Sports Officer.

T. Mohana Kumar, Chief Educational Officer, said spirit of participation was more important than winning. The winners of team events in the boys' section were Pullambadi block (basketball), Tiruverambur (football), Manikandam (hockey), Manapparai (kabaddi), Andanallur (kho-kho) and Andanallur (volleyball). In the girls' category, the winners were Manapparai (basketball), Andanallur (football), Tiruverambur (hockey), Musiri (kabaddi), Tiruverambur (kho-kho) and Musiri (volleyball).

Collector T. Soundiah gave away prizes in the presence of N. Sundaram, Deputy General Manager, SDAT.
