IGNOU to launch IT training programme for school teachers

Special Correspondent

In Information Technology on September 5

MADURAI: Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) is launching a training programme in Information Technology for school teachers on September 5. It is a joint initiative by the IGNOU and ICT Academy of Tamil Nadu (ICTACT) with whom the university has signed a memorandum of collaboration here on July 14 to enhance the competency of in-service teachers.

In a press release, M. Shanmugham, Regional Director, IGNOU, Madurai Regional Centre, said that 30 teachers would be trained in the first batch of the programme.

It would begin on Teachers Day at the computer laboratory of the university's new Regional Centre at Sikkandar Chavadi here.

The 42-hour training programme would be covered in four weekends without disturbing the working hours of teachers. “Recent developments in the IT field have given scope for educational institutions to make use of technology components in classroom and combine them with traditional mode of teaching. The concept of ‘Smart Classroom' warrants use of IT in teaching-learning process,” Dr.Shanmugham said.

He said that the university has thought of conducting training programmes for teachers since it felt that there is a need to introduce a training package for them and develop their IT skills.

“Teachers will be able to manage the changing scenario in education from traditional literacy to digital literacy.

It develops innovative thinking rather than compelling students to learn by rote.”

The training programme, designed by national experts, would enhance teachers' ability in handling ICT classes.

There would be presentations, hands-on lab exercises and in-house assignments. Classes would be handled by professionals from the ICTACT.

There would be flexible training slots — evening, weekends and holidays.

Teachers of government and private schools, interested in the programme, could contact the IGNOU Regional Centre in Madurai.
