VELLORE: The Principal Secretary to the Punjab government, B.C. Gupta, visited the Primary Agricultural Credit Society (PACS) in Bagaveli in Walajapet taluk on Tuesday as part of his visit to Tamil Nadu to study the functioning of the Joint Liability Groups (JLGs). JLGs give special attention to the small, marginal, tenant and lessee farmers, supporting them either by providing short term loan (crop loan) or medium term loan for purchase of milch animals and rearing of goats. S. Thiruguna Iyyappadurai, Joint Registrar of Cooperative Societies, Vellore Region said in a release that Dr. Gupta studied the facilities available in the PACS such as mini soil testing lab, common service centre, agro centre and farmers' classroom training and interacted with the farmers. Vermin composting fertilizer unit He was so impressed with the farmers' response that he has decided to introduce the system in Punjab. Dr. Gupta later inaugurated a vermi composting fertilizer unit in the PACS. The Joint Registrar said that at present, Vellore district had 1401 JLGs, each having 10 members.
