MUSICAL Medley: N.Sruthi, Vocalist, R.Raghul violinist and R.Satheeshkumar Mrithangam performing in Thanjavur.

THANJAVUR: Gokulashtami was celebrated with music programmes on Wednesday at the Brindavan of Sri Narayana Theerthar on the banks of Kodamuruti river at Thirupunthuruthi near here. Tharangams from the Krishna Leela Tharangini to which, it is said, Lord Krishna danced, was rendered by Narayana Theerthar.

The programmes began with a lecture on Thirumurais by Shanmugha Selvaganapathy of Thiruvaiyaru. He said Thirumurais represented the oldest musical tradition of Tamil Nadu. Thirumurais were rendered by Nayanmars including Karaikal Ammaiyar, Thirugnanasambandar, Thirunavukarasar, Sundarar and others. Thirugnanasambandar and Thirunavukarasar met at Thirupunthuruthi and the palanquin of Thirunavukarasar was carried by Thirugnanasambandar.

A.Ramji, Adviser to Sri Narayana Theerthar Trust which organised the festival, said more than descriptions of Leelas of Lord Krishna, ‘Krishna Sthuthi' (Worship of Krishna) was dominant in the Krishna Leela Tharangini rendered by Narayana Theerthar.

He describes ‘Kalinganarthanam', ‘Lifting of Govarathanagiri' by Krishna in a few lines and continues with praise of the Lord.

This is a unique feature of Krishna Leela Tharangini. Krishna's birth is described as Avatar coming to earth.

Vidvamsini Leela Ramgopal from Bangalore said Narayana Theerthar, born in Andhra Pradesh, came to Tamil Nadu and rendered Krishna Leela Tharangini at Varahur near Thirupunthuruthi. She advocated standardisation of the singing of Krishna Leela Tharangini . Thirupunthuruthi V.Venkatesan, secretary, said the trust, in consultation with Semangudi Srinivasa Iyer, released a book on standardised singing of Tharangams of Narayana Theerthar. It was later improved upon with additions and released by the trust with Seetha Rajan as consultant.

He said the trust was planning to take up the renovation of the Brindavan of Narayana Theerthar in Thirupunthuruthi.

He sought the co-operation of the Kundrakudi Mutt, which controls the Brindavan , in this connection.

Dr.V.Varadarajan, President of Brahan Natyanajali foundation, D.Krishnan, former Executive Director of Life Insurance Corporation Ltd, R.Arunachalam from Thiruvaiyaru and B.Anantharaman, Teacher, participated . Vocal by N.Sruthi followed the inauguration. R.Raghul was on the violin and R.Satheeshkumar on Mridangam.
