KOLKATA: Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram's remarks on the existence of camps of armed cadres in the State are baseless, Mohammad Salim, a central committee member of the Communist Party of India (Marxist), said here on Wednesday, adding that such statements were made out of the compulsion of coalition politics.
The Home Minister has made the statement because of political compulsion and to divert attention from the Azad controversy, Mr. Salim told journalists.
Even though Mr. Chidambaram did not name any political party, Trinamool Congress chief Mamata Banerjee has on several occasions made claims that several camps of armed cadres of the CPI(M) existed in the Maoist-affected Jangalmahal region and that the joint operations by security forces were being used by the party as a cover to force an entry into the area.
The Congress-led UPA government is trying to shield the Trinamool Congress to hide its links with the Maoists, Mr. Salim said.
According to him, the CPI(M) is the only party sustaining the movement against the Maoists. Allegations against the CPI(M) will only encourage the Maoists, he added.
