Madikeri to meet Kollam

Madikeri: Sports Authority of India (SAI), Madikeri, will meet Kollam in the final of the South Zone inter-SAI hostel hockey championships for women being played at the SAI synthetic hockey facility here.

In the first semifinal on Wednesday, Kollam got past a fighting Mayiladuthurai 3-1 (via the tie-break) to enter the final. The second semifinal between SAI Madikeri and Thrissur saw ebullient forward Chaitra scoring her second hat-trick for Madikeri in the 6-0 win over Thrissur.

The final would be played on Thursday at 9.30 a.m.

The results (semifinals): SAI, Madikeri 6 (Chaitra 3 (hat-trick), Saira Banu 2, Madhura 1) bt Thrissur 0; Kollam 3 (Sunita, Prajwala, Ranjitha) bt Mayiladuthurai 1 (Subhadra) .

Referees XI posts win

In exhibition football match played to mark Referees' Day and FIFA Fair Play Day, Referees XI defeated Veterans XI 2-1 here on Wednesday. After the game, G. Murthy and T. Elangovan were presented with the ‘Best Referee of the Year' and ‘Best Assistant Referee of the Year' awards respectively.

The result: Referees XI 2 (Andrew, George) bt Veterans XI 1 (Murali) .

Mphasis' gesture

Powerlifter Farman Basha and swimmers Prasanta Karmarkar and Sharath Gayakwad were presented with a purse of Rs. one lakh each by Mphasis for their preparation in the Commonwealth Games in New Delhi.

It may be recalled that the swimmers went for the World Disabled Games in The Netherlands recently without proper preparation and gear.

The three have been promised Rs. three lakhs each for a podium finish in New Delhi.

JASE Inter-school Cup

The Jain Academy for Sporting Excellence will host the JASE Invitational inter-school Cup, scheduled to be held between September 6 and 10, at the JIRS sports complex in Bangalore. The event includes competitions in nearly 42 disciplines for senior and junior categories.
