Baton gets short end of the stick

Avinash Nair

BANGALORE: The enthusiasm matched the hype, but only among the organisers.

The Bangalore leg of the Queen's Baton Relay (QBR) on Thursday was chaotic and mismanaged. Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa's absence did not help either.

Veteran Olympian athlete Kenneth Powell and the former shuttler ace Prakash Padukone received the baton from Ministers Gulihatti D. Shekar and S. Suresh Kumar but struggled to even walk a lap of the track at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium as hordes of photographers and TV crew virtually immobilised them.

When the duo, along with a host of sportspersons, was jostled out of the stadium, the crowds took over, adding to the circus.

As for the rest of the route (10.5 km) the reception was anything but encouraging.

The who's who of Karnataka sports was present at the stadium, adding colour with their violet Ts. And both Mr. Powell and Mr. Padukone came in well on time and much before the announcement of Mr. Yeddyurappa's absence was made public.
