Plea for ILS at Karipur airport to check delays

Staff Reporter

Kozhikode: The UAE Gulf Malayalee Coordination Committee has demanded that authorities at the Calicut International Airport at Karipur find an immediate solution to the delays in flight landing and take-off from the airport.

Committee chairman Ashraf Kalathingalpara told presspersons here on Friday that the problem had become frequent owing to recent bad weather. Many flights were being diverted to Chennai, Kochi, Coimbatore and Bangalore, putting passengers to hardship.

A large number of passengers preferred not to use the airport and international airline companies may follow suit, he warned.

Mr. Kalathingalpara said the main reason for the problem was the absence of the Instrument Landing System (ILS) on the eastern side of the runway. The ILS facilitates easy landing in any climate.

At present, the pilots cannot see the runway in case of slight rain or mist.

The ILS had been set up on the west side of the runway. Pleas to set it up on the eastern side had fallen on deaf ears, he said.
