‘Broadband will make India a superpower'

Staff Reporter

BANGALORE: Even while broadband technology will empower India to rise to the status of a superpower, the problems of security and addiction need to be duly tackled, said P.V. Acharya, director, Centre for Development of Telematics (C-DoT).

Talking on “Broadband technology and its impact on India” during the Foundation Day of the National Aerospace Laboratories (NAL) here on Friday, Mr. Acharya said: “The software, knowledge and service industries will be positively impacted by the growth in the technology.” Since unique identification number, passports, licences and banking will all go through a national broadband infrastructure when it is put in place, security will be of prime concern. “There is a threat of data being replicated,” he added.

Along with them, a number of location-based services, surveillance solutions and family oriented interactive video meetings would go up, he added. On the other hand, VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) services such as Skype would become cheaper, affecting business of cellular companies. “When the content of IPTV increases, it will impact the revenue of DTH, cable and terrestrial television.

The face of advertising will change with more real-time, context-based, personal advertisements,” he added.
