NEW DELHI: The top-seeded International Master Sahaj Grover defeated Sushant Manuja with black pieces in the first round of the boys section in the National sub-junior chess championship at the Kulachi Hansraj Model School, Ashok Vihar, here on Saturday. Former world youth champion and the second seed, Girish Koushik, beat Anshuman Srivas to open the campaign on a bright note. In the girls section, the top-seeded J. Saranya of Tamil Nadu asserted herself with the black pieces against Gauri Keshav Hadkonkar of Goa. The boy's event has attracted 172, including 125 international rated players, while the girl's event features 100 players. The tournament will be played on an 11-round Swiss league. The results: First round: Boys: Sushant Manuja lost to Sahaj Grover; Girish A. Koushik bt Anshuman Srivas; M. Chakravarthi Reddy lost to Sayantan Das; Yashas D bt Kumar Gaurav; Pavit Singh lost to Tejas Ravichandran; Antonio Viani D'Cunha bt Saksham Dewan; Muhammed Shibily lost to G. Akash; Utkal Ranjan Sahoo bt Rohit Ramanan. Girls: Gauri Keshav Hadkonkar lost to J. Saranya; Stuti Dewan lost P. V. Nandhidhaa; Priyanka Kumari bt Tanvi Bhave; Sonakshi Rathore bt P. Preethy; Chitrana Nerka lost to Sunyasakta Satpathy .
