Thrissur: The Kerala Agricultural University (KAU) has developed a software system for decentralised accounting. The Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP)-based software, named University Financial Accounting System (UFAST), is claimed to be the first of its kind in the country. “Developed by IT personnel with KAU, the new software has been effectively used to manage KAU's finances with 1,888 heads of account linked to a chain of units across the State. This proves that the software is ideal for other institutions that require decentralised accounting,” said KAU Vice-Chancellor K. R. Viswambharan. The UFAST is claimed to be effective in all stages of financial management — budgeting, expenditure monitoring, re-appropriation and finalisation of annual accounts. It accurately assesses details of accounts from a single point. “The UFAST has enhanced the efficiency of financial management in KAU. Till recently, absence of a fool-proof accounting system in the university had contributed to its financial problems,” said Mr. Viswambharan. The university has also developed a software system named University Legal Information System (ULIS) that provides details about litigations the university is involved in. Finance Minister T. M. Thomas Isaac and C. Ravindranath, MLA, will launch the UFAST and the ULIS respectively at a function here on Monday.
