Expo showcases traditional creations

Choice aplenty:Visitors taking a look at the collection of saris at the handlooms exhibition organised by Co-optex .

TIRUCHI: Shimmering silk saris with intricate thread work, contrasting colours and varying designs of beautiful cotton saris rule the roost at the state-level exhibition organised by the State handlooms and weavers' co-operative association, Thanjavur.

The exhibition inaugurated by T. Soundiah, District Collector, opened grandly here on Saturday.

The expo houses handloom works of more than 30 weavers associations along with co-optex regional shops from all over the State.

Women have a wide variety to choose from what with a wide array of cotton and silk saris on display. Beautiful silk saris, with contrasting colours, laced with gold threading of varying peacock and mango-shaped designs , ranging from Rs. 3,000 to Rs. 20,000 take centre stage . Fashionable Kancheepuram silk saris and elegant Arani saris are displayed at the exhibition .

Pure cotton saris and Thirubhuvanam saris ranging from Rs.300 to Rs.3,000 also appeal to a variety of buyers.

The collection also includes colourful cotton bed sheets, pillow covers and towels which are easy on the pocket.

The traditional expo would be incomplete without the quintessential silk and cotton dhotis for men which area must for traditional occasions.

The timeless ‘jamakalams' with its trademark designs and vibrant colours are also sure to catch the eye.

“The State-level exhibition is funded by the Centre of Handloom development in Delhi. We have fixed a sales target of Rs.50 lakh this year. Moreover, we are also planning to organise a district-level exhibition very soon,” said T. Balasundaram, Senior Manager, Design and Production, Co-optex.

He added that a special discount of 20 per cent would be given to all customers.The expo is on at Makkal Mandram, Thillai Nagar, fifth cross till September 19th from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
