Minister launches ‘Save water bodies' campaign

Nagercoil: ‘Save water bodies' campaign was inaugurated by Tourism Minister N. Suresh Rajan at Ananthankulam near Parvathipuram junction here on Saturday.

The Minister said that Kanyakumari district had been blessed with green paddy fields, hills and various water bodies.

It was the bounden duty of each and every person in the district to save the water bodies. He also sought the co-operation of farmers and people from all walks of life for the successful implementation of this programme.

Collector Rajendra Ratnoo said that all stakeholders, including district administration, Public Works Department (water resources) and representatives of water users' associations should come extend their cooperation for the success of the campaign.

Services of students of schools and colleges, members of self-help groups and non-governmental organisations would be utilised to create awareness among the people of the need to ensure hygiene not only in their houses but also in the surrounding areas.

The district administration would give financial assistance to people who wanted to construct toilets at their houses. Steps would be taken to initiate action against those who polluted water bodies by dumping wastes into them.

The campaign would be carried out at Kulasekaram Pattinam channel (September 11), Eraniel Odai (September 18), Parakkaikal (September 25), Neyoor odai and areas in and around Monday Market (October 2), Asaripallam odai and surrounding areas of Asaripallam (October 7), Kottar channel and the surrounding areas of Kottar (October 16), Athikadai channel (October 23) and Manakudi odai areas (October 30).
