Rise in paddy production

PALAKKAD: The intervention by the Central and State governments as well as the local bodies has helped in increasing the production, productivity and the area of cultivation of paddy in the district.

According to the district panchayat, in 2009-10 the production of paddy increased to 4,69,200 tonne from 2,70,013 tonne in 2006-07. The productivity increased to 4,244 kg in 2009-10 from 2,472 kg in 2006-07.

Thus, the productivity achieved in the district is almost double the average State production of 2,600 kg a hectare .

The area of cultivation increased to 1,10,574 hectares in 2009-10 as against 1,09,630 hectares in 2006-07.

In 2007-08, the district had paddy cultivation in 1,09,63 hectares and produced 3,03,705 tonne paddy and the productivity was 2,770 kg a hectare. In 2008-09, the area of cultivation increased to 1,09,990 hectares, producing 4,01,990 tonnes with a productivity of 3,656 kg a hectare.
