New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Tuesday questioned the Mayawati Government in Uttar Pradesh over what type of construction activities were being carried out at the old Jail complex in Lucknow where an eco-park was to come up. A Bench of Justice P. Sathasivam and Justice Anil R. Dave asked the State to file an affidavit in two weeks on the nature of construction undertaken after the old jail area was converted into an eco-park at the 195-acre site. The Bench gave this direction to the Government on an application filed by Sangam Lal Pandey, who alleged that in the name of constructing a boundary wall, entrance and public convenience, the State Government was undertaking huge construction in the green area. Concrete structures Mr. Pandey submitted that concrete structures were being constructed in the park which would be subsequently used to put up the statues and memorials. He said the park was being so developed that one portion of it would integrate with Manyavar Kashiram Samarak Sthal. This, he said, was contrary to the undertaking given by the State Government that 195 acres of old jail land would be used only for developing the eco-park. When Mr. Pandey produced photographs to show the ongoing construction, Justice Sathasivam told senior counsel Krishnan Venugopal, appearing for the State, “Photographs show many structures. It looks like a dam site. Why are you wasting so much of cement and steel if they are meant only for a boundary wall?”
