Youth killed in group clash

Raktima Bose

DEGANGA (WEST BENGAL): One youth was killed and several vehicles were torched in clashes between two groups since Monday night over demarcating the boundary of a burial ground at Nagerjheel here in North 24 Parganas district.

Prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Cr.PC were clamped in the entire Deganga police station area. In all, 125 Army jawans reached the area on Tuesday evening and staged a flag march.

According to a senior district official, the setting up of a makeshift structure along the boundary wall of the Deganga burial ground triggered the clashes. “Local people obstructed the approach road to the area from the district headquarters in Barasat at the Beliaghata bridge. More than 40 shops and houses were ransacked and set afire. Two trucks and a bus were also set ablaze,” Siddh Nath Gupta, DIG (Presidency Range), said. Mohammed Sahabuddin, from Falti village, was shot in the leg during the clashes and he died after being taken to hospital.
